Fluorescent tube lights are actually low pressure mercury vapor discharge lights which produce UV light. This UV light bombards the wall of a phosphor coated glass tube before being converted into visible white light. This process requires both high voltage to start (starter) and a device (ballast) to limit the current during operation.
